With this sudden cold snap and icy conditions, the likelihood of frozen pipes has increased. So, we have put together some handy hints and tips to help you combat the potential of freezing.

To avoid frozen pipes, one of the best things to do is to keep your heating on. This may seem costly, but even at a low level it can help to keep the water running through the pipes and will be far less expensive than a leak or burst pipe caused by freezing temperatures.

Running your cold taps on a regular basis also gets the water moving through the system and prevents it from freezing. Plus, if you have an outside tap, turn off your inside tap and run the outside one until it has drained. But, be aware this will only work with new builds, and where the tap has been fitted by a properly skilled plumber.

If you have an empty property, make sure the heating is kept on at a low level, or fully drain the pipes so no water remains. Some insurers will insist on this, to avoid the liability of frozen pipes.

If you are reading this and it is too late, don’t panic. Turn the stopcock off and then give AA Gas Services a call on 07949 242491. Do not try to thaw out the frozen pipes yourself. This could cause more damage and result in a leak or, even worse, a burst pipe. This is particularly important if you have copper pipes, or if gas is involved. Leave it to the experts.
