Plumbers in Hull have been supporting Gas Safety Week, and AA Gas Services is no exception.

Gas Safety Week is a national campaign to raise awareness of gas safety across the UK. It is co-ordinated by Gas Safe Register with support from the gas industry including plumbers and gas engineers, retailers, manufacturers, consumer bodies and the public.

Our gas engineers want to educate people in Hull on how to stay safe at home and protect themselves from the risks of unsafe gas appliances like carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions.

Twenty one million households in United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey use gas for heating, hot water and cooking, yet we take it for granted that our boilers, cookers and gas fires are safe. Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Did you know?

  • Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.
  • Gas Safe Register estimates that there is a hard core of around 7,500 illegal gas fitters operating across the UK and up to 250,000 illegal gas jobs may be carried out each year (Gas Safe Register Research 2009).
  • Although there is awareness that gas appliances need to be safety checked annually, 43% of Britons don’t do it, and 10% have gas appliances which have never been checked (Gas Safety Week Research 2011).

Hull is currently the fifth safest area in Great Britain, based on the percentages of gas appliances found to be unsafe. And we like to think that has something to do with the expertise of AA Gas Services’ plumbers in Hull.

However, just like you give your car an MOT every year, you should have your home gas safety checked every year by one of our Gas Safe registered engineers. Why not book in today?

By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Following these few simple checks can mean accidents are less likely to happen:

  • Check your gas appliances every year - Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Tenants – make sure your landlord calls us and arranges for this to be done.
  • Check your engineer is Gas Safe registered - You can find and check an engineer at www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500. All our gas engineers are Gas Safe registered and our Gas Safe Register number is 223102.
  • Check your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card - Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card.
  • Check for warning signs your appliances aren’t working correctly - e.g. lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room.
  • Check you know the six signs of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness.
  • Check you have an audible carbon monoxide alarm - This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home.

So, don’t delay, call AA Gas Services on 07949 242491 or 07951 050472 and let one of our plumbers check that your home is safe for you and your family. Making Hull a safe place to live.
